Mistakes on national newspaper websites seem to be increasing.

This is probably because in a lot of cases work goes unsubbed and in the hurry to get content online before a rival, mistakes are missed. However, some of it just appears to be sloppy. On one national paper’s website on Monday I noticed two missing words in the first two paragraphs of a story. This has since been rectified so I won’t point out which site it was on.

This makes the argument for having good subs stronger than ever. Whereas content online can be easily updated, newspaper content cannot. This can, in extreme cases, lead to a lot of trouble for journalist’s in a rush who get their facts wrong.

So it is worrying that the Express newspapers are going to be published without being seen be subs from March next year. Journalist’s will directly sub their own work. I can see this leading to problems. I know from my own experience that I cannot always see mistakes in the piece of copy I have been staring at for the last few hours.

On a lighter note, it could all make for some amusing reading.

Linked to this, in one of my previous post’s I pointed to a mistake made in a Reuter’s article online. I don’t want to seem like I’m on a crusade against Reuters, this is something which as I have said is all over national paper websites and I’m noticing it more now I’m training as a journalist. I’m not saying I’m exempt from this either, we are all human and journalist’s are hard pressed to get content online as quickly as possible but perhaps they should do it with a little more care.
