It has therefore surprised me to learn that the News of the World actively discourages the use of shorthand. The use of shorthand was also discussed in this Press Gazette blog and some working journalists do not advocate the use of shorthand. The majority of comments do uphold it as a very useful skill, something I must remember as I sit through my 9am shorthand classes working up to that 100 wpm goal.
